How This Calculator Works

Your metabolic age estimate is built from 5 factors that drive resting metabolic rate (RMR) in adults 30+: BMI, waist circumference (visceral fat marker), activity level, sleep duration, and strength training frequency. Each factor adjusts your baseline RMR estimate using published research on metabolic decline with age, sarcopenia, and the effect of resistance training on basal metabolic rate. The result is your estimated metabolic age — the age at which your current RMR would be average. Read more about how metabolism changes after 40.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is metabolic age?

Metabolic age compares your resting metabolic rate (RMR) to the average RMR for different age groups. If your metabolism burns calories like an average 35-year-old's but you're 50, your metabolic age is 35. Lower than chronological is good; higher means your metabolism has slowed faster than expected for your age.

How accurate is the metabolic age calculation?

This calculator uses validated formulas for RMR estimation (Mifflin-St Jeor) adjusted by activity, body composition signals (waist circumference), and lifestyle factors (sleep, strength training). It is a directionally accurate estimate, not a clinical measurement. For exact RMR, an indirect calorimetry test in a clinic is the gold standard.

Can I lower my metabolic age?

Yes — the two biggest levers are strength training (rebuilds muscle, the metabolic engine) and sleep quality (restores growth hormone and reduces cortisol). Most adults can lower their metabolic age by 5–10 years over 6–12 months through consistent habit change. Read the full guide.

Why does waist circumference matter so much?

Waist circumference is a stronger predictor of metabolic health than BMI because it directly reflects visceral (deep abdominal) fat. Visceral fat secretes inflammatory cytokines that worsen insulin sensitivity and lower metabolic efficiency. See the cortisol-belly fat link.
